George Butterworth ~ Arranged by Melanie Thorne

This is an arrangement of the famous orchestral Rhapsody by George Butterworth.  The original work was based on a folk song collected at Billingshurst in Sussex in 1907, and the Rhapsody was composed between 1911-1913, just prior to the First World War, when Butterworth was killed in action in 1916.  This saxophone arrangement gives the instruments solo opportunities, yet the fuller textures reveal more complex harmonies, which are well-suited to these instruments.  (Grade 7-8)

G F Handel ~ arranged by Melanie Thorne
This is an arrangement of the famous ‘Entrance of the Queen of Sheba’ from Solomon.  It is not always faithful to the original as it is not just a transcription and has been slightly shortened to make it playable for wind instruments.  The 4th part also gives the work a sense of direction through the varying bass line, and provides interest, rather than just harmonic support, for the baritone player. John W Bratton ~ arranged by Melanie Thorne

The melody of the original work by John W Bratton, was composed in 1907.  The lively, original two step style lends itself well to an arrangement for Saxophone quartet.  Needless to say, Sempre has included some individuality in this arrangement, with melodic interest in all parts, a brief swing-style section, and a fast finale to complete the work. (Grade 6-8)
